Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic preview

Fresh from dropped points in the Premier League, Arsenal now turn their attention to the FA Cup. The Gunners are already in one cup final and will fancy their chances of getting to another, thanks to their squad depth this season.

Mikel Arteta’s boys made light work of Portsmouth in the last round, winning 4-1 after going behind, and they face a Wigan side in serious relegation trouble in League One. The Latics' only win in their last nine came in the FA Cup at Preston, with six defeats in that time as they sit third bottom.

Ryan Lowe was sacked last week, and at the time of writing there has been no replacement named, which isn't ideal heading to the best team in the country. Wigan have suffered defeats to Lincoln City, Peterborough, and Reading in their last three matches, but they have won their previous six FA Cup away games, scoring ten goals and conceding just once in that run.

Now, they face an Arsenal side who head into the game on the back of seven wins from their last 10 matches across all competitions. Mikel Arteta's side have scored at least three goals in six of those matches, as well as keeping four clean sheets in their last eight attempts.

Gabriel Martinelli has performed well in front of goal for Arsenal this season, netting 10 goals in league and cup. The Brazilian international doesn't start a lot in the Premier League, but has started three of the four domestic cup games he has been involved in, and has scored in four of his five Champions League appearances.

Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic team news

Cup goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is expected to start in goal and there should be minutes for Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who have had very limited involvement in recent weeks.

William Saliba missed the Brentford match due to illness. There is every chance he remains rested. Mikel Merino remains out (foot), along with Kai Haverts (muscle tissue) and Max Dowman (ankle).

Martin Odegaard made his return on Thursday night against Brentford, but he was seen limping heavily after the match having received treatment during the second half on a knee problem.

Wigan reported no injuries or suspensions ahead of the trip to London and are expected to have a full squad available.

Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup

Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic prediction

Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly make changes but Arsenal's 'second string' is a top six Premier League side in itself, and shouldn't have any issues dismissing Wigan. Despite looking flat offensively in midweek, this looks like a perfect opportunity for Arsenal to record a big-scoring win.

Correct score prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Wigan Athletic
