Emery’s comments come at a time when Aston Villa have undergone a stunning transformation. After collecting just three points and scoring a single goal in their opening five Premier League fixtures, the Midlands side has now won eight of their last nine matches.

That superb run has moved Villa to within touching distance of the top of the table and just six points behind Arsenal.

What Emery said

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s high-profile encounter at Villa Park, Emery praised Arsenal’s consistency and title credentials.

He said, “We now have the really huge opportunity tomorrow to play against Arsenal, the best team until now and, of course, I think the favourites to win this trophy in the Premier League because they are performing and competing fantastically.”

He added that facing the league leaders would be a significant challenge for his team on every level.

He added, “Tomorrow (today) is a really huge test. Huge test collectively, huge test individually, and for me as a coach as well, I am delighted to have this opportunity.”

Although hopes of a first league title since 1981 may seem ambitious, Villa remain firmly in contention for a Champions League place, while also enjoying an impressive Europa League campaign.

A win on Saturday could temporarily send Emery’s side to second place, with Manchester City playing later in the day.
