Former Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi was honoured alongside his former Chelsea teammate Didier Drogba and Senegalese music icon Akon in Ivory Coast.

Mikel received by Ivory Coast first lady

Mikel played for Chelsea for 11 years between 2006 and 2017 and was a mainstay in the Super Eagles team for 14 years between 2005 and 2019, becoming one of the greatest players to don Nigeria’s green and white in international football.

The former Chelsea midfielder met up with former teammates Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba, as well as former Manchester City star Yaya Toure and R&B sensation Akon in Ivory Coast where they were welcomed by the first lady of the country. 

Mikel shared snapshots of his visit to the West African country on his Instagram account, with the caption “It is a beautiful afternoon in Ivory Coast. It is indeed an honor to be welcomed by The First Lady of Ivory Coast Mrs Dominique Ouattara @dominique_ouattara_.

Mikel set for AFCON 2023 draws

The team of football and music dignitaries also presented a national team jersey of Ivory Coast to the first lady of the country during their visit to the presidency. 

Mikel was selected as one of the ambassadors for the 2023 AFCON set to take place in Ivory Coast next year, alongside Drogba and Akon, and will be part of the draws taking place on Thursday.

The former Super Eagles star is a past champion of AFCON after winning the competition in 2013, following two previous third-place finishes.
