Yekini holds Nigeria’s all-time goalscoring record as the Galatasaray striker is currently just six goals away from surpassing Yekini’s long-standing national record.

Yekini, who passed away in 2012, remains a towering figure in Nigerian football history, famously scoring the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal in 1994.

What Osimhen said

Picking his top five players in an interview with Pulse Sports, he named the former Shooting Stars and Gateway United player as Number followed by other Players.

He said, “Rashidi Yekini number one, Victor Osimhen, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Obafemi Martins and Segub Odegbami.

Earlier, the former CAF Player of the Year emphasised respect for Yekini’s legacy and reiterated his commitment to team success over individual accolades.

He said, “To be honest, I don’t have this in my head. Even when I started playing for the Super Eagles, I never checked who the highest goalscorer in Nigeria’s history was.”

The former Napoli forward explained that his primary motivation has always been contributing to the team.

He added, “I was just doing my job, trying to help my teammates with goals, assists, and everything. To be up there with the greatest striker the country has ever produced is something to be proud of.”

Osimhen was clear that breaking the record would not diminish Yekini’s achievements.

“It doesn’t matter if I surpass or equal it; he’s the greatest ever, and to be mentioned alongside him is a privilege. That doesn’t diminish what late Rashidi Yekini did for the Super Eagles, and I’m happy to walk in his footsteps.”
