AFCON 2025: Morocco vs Tanzania preview, prediction, team news and head-to-head

The Atlas Lions enter the knockout phase as heavy favourites, but the Taifa Stars are eager to cause a massive upset in Rabat.

Morocco enter this fixture having finished at the summit of their group with seven points. The Atlas Lions recorded a 3-0 victory against Zambia in their most recent outing, a result that restored faith among the home supporters. 

Walid Regragui has managed to keep his side solid at the back, conceding only one goal in their three group matches. With the tournament being held on home soil, the pressure is immense for Morocco to claim their first continental title.

Tanzania, meanwhile, made history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time in 45 years. They finished third in Group C with two points, narrowly edging out Angola on goals scored to secure their spot. 

Their previous match saw them fight hard to stay in the competition following a 1-1 draw against Tunisia. The Taifa Stars will need to be perfect defensively to stand any chance against a Moroccan side that has dominated them in recent years.

Morocco have a dominant record in this fixture, winning seven of the last eight meetings between the two nations. 

The Atlas Lions have been particularly impressive in recent encounters, securing back-to-back victories against Tanzania, with the recent being a 1-0 win.

Tanzania's only victory against Morocco came over a decade ago in 2013, when they triumphed 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier. Since then, Morocco have kept four consecutive clean sheets against the Taifa Stars.

Morocco have received a major boost as captain Achraf Hakimi returned to full fitness and played in the final group game. However, Morocco will be without defender Hamza Igamane, who is sidelined through injury

Tanzania, on the other hand, head into the fixture with a fully fit squad, with no injury concerns reported. The Taifa Stars are expected to lean on the experience of Mbwana Samatta to spearhead their attack in a bid to make it to the quarter final.
