AFCON 2025: I am saddened — Sunday Oliseh reacts to criticisms against his commentary in Nigeria vs Tanzania
Legendary Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh has released a statement addressing the accusations that his commentary during Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 opener against Tanzania was biased against the West Africans.
The 1994 AFCON winner was a co-commentator for the game, tasked with providing live insights and analysis. However, a sizable number of the broadcast’s audience found his performance lacking.
The criticisms ranged from “poor flow” to “insufferableness” to “laid-back delivery” to “dislike for Victor Osimhen,” among others. But the comments that managed to pierce Oliseh's skin were the claims that he was pro-Tanzania on the day.

What Oliseh said
The former Dortmund midfielder took to social media and addressed the allegations via a statement. He expressed his displeasure at the claims, explained that his role was one which required neutrality, and swore allegiance to the Super Eagles.
“I am deeply saddened by the recent suggestions on social media that my analysis of the Super Eagles’ performance against Tanzania stems from a lack of support for the team,” the statement read.
“For nearly 40 years, I have dedicated my life and career to the progress of Nigerian football. While my professional duty requires impartiality and objective critique, my heart remains firmly with the players and Coach Eric Chelle. Constructive honesty is not a sign of dislike; it is a tool for improvement born out of a desire to see our nation succeed.
“Just recently, I was accused of being "too supportive" of the coaching staff. To now be accused of the opposite suggests a misunderstanding of my role as an analyst.
“My loyalty to the Green and White is unwavering and requires no defence. Let us move past these distractions and unite in our support for the players. God bless Nigeria.”
