3 Reasons why Manchester United must sack Amorim regardless of Europa League result
Ruben Amorim might have one last shot at redemption in the Europa League final, but no matter what happens in San Mames, Manchester United’s decision should already be made.
Trophy or not, the numbers don’t lie, and they are screaming for change at the helm of affairs in Old Trafford, regardless of the result of the final.
1. Amorim worse than Derby County’s worst
Despite being in a European final, Amorim’s league record is an outright disaster. With just 24 points from 26 matches, he’s averaging a jaw-dropping 0.92 points per game.
For perspective, Paul Jewell’s infamous Derby County side, considered the worst in Premier League history, managed a slightly better 0.94 points per game in 2007/08.
When your numbers are sinking below Derby’s Titanic season, something is fundamentally broken. Even if Manchester United lift the Europa League trophy, it won’t erase the fact that Amorim has dragged one of the world’s biggest clubs into statistical embarrassment.
2. Manchester United yet to cross historical relegation threshold
As it stands, United are in 16th place with just 37 points, not even enough to cross the basic 40-point mark, which teams fighting relegation aim for, with one game left.
This club has not managed to win back-to-back league games all season, for the first time ever in Premier League history, and have only picked up two points out of a possible 18 since April.
That type of form doesn’t just flirt with relegation, it guarantees it. If the Premier League table were based only on Amorim’s reign, United would be packing their bags for the Championship.
3. A Europa League trophy can't mask the chaos
Yes, silverware is great. But one good night in Bilbao should not distract Manchester United from months of dysfunction. The Red Devils have not won a league game in eight consecutive outings, the longest drought in their history.
The board might think Amorim deserves time, but this kind of collapse is unlikely to be solved by a Cup victory or Champions League qualification, and if anything, the Europa League final should be his farewell tour.
