The ruling has reshuffled Group C, with Benin now sitting top on 14 points, level with South Africa but ahead on goal difference. Nigeria and Rwanda follow closely with 11 points each.
What Rohr said
Rohr, speaking on Brila FM, said while the decision was justified, the delay undermined its impact.
“The decision of FIFA to deduct three points from South Africa is a logical one, but it’s coming very late, six months already that they had to do it,” Rohr said.
Rohr noted the challenge ahead for his side, “Now we have two games to play, two very difficult games away in Rwanda and against Nigeria in Uyo. South Africa play their last two games at home, which means they will play seven home matches (in the qualifiers) out of 10 because Lesotho and Zimbabwe play their home matches in South Africa. But we will try to qualify and remain humble.”
Benin’s qualification hopes will hinge on their performances in those decisive away matches, while South Africa will benefit from a favourable run-in at home.
