2026 Athletics Calendar: Championships, Dates, Venues, and What To Expect

The 2026 athletics season is set to be a distinctive year, marked by a series of high-stakes continental showdowns and the debut of a groundbreaking global final in place of a traditional outdoor World Championships.

Here's a breakdown on what to expect in the 2026 athletics calendar season.

The Cross Country Championship will take place in Tallahassee, Florida, on January 10, 2026 as the world's elite distance runners take on the challenging terrain of grass and mud to compete for the first global titles of the year.

Highlighting the indoor season will be the World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland from March 20-22.

For the first time since inception, the World Relays will take place in Africa in Gaborone, Botswana from May 2-3. Participating countries will battle for supremacy in the 4x100m, 4x400m, and the exciting mixed-gender relays, with all finalists automatically booking their tickets to the 2027 World Championships.

The prestigious Diamond League meetings will kick off in May, and the first city scheduled to be Doha.

The Commonwealth Games will take center stage in Glasgow, Scotland with athletics set to hold from July 27–August 1, 2026. This edition will feature the historic return of the Commonwealth Mile, which replaces the 1500m.

The next generation of track and field stars will gather at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon from August 4-9, 2026 gunning to win world titles and medals for their respective countries.

Competing for honours from August 10–16, Europe's best athletes will converge in Brirmingham.

The 2026 season will culminate in Budapest, Hungary from September 11–13, for the inaugural "best-of-the-best" ultimate championship showdown. This fast-paced, high-stakes event will feature reigning World and Olympic champions, and only the world's top-ranked athletes competing for significant prize money to officially close out the year.
