Nigeria secure four gold medals at the ongoing Para Powerlifting World Cup in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

Nigerian para powerlifters have showcased exceptional talent at the ongoing Para Powerlifting World Cup in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, securing a total of four gold medals.

The impressive performance reflects their determination and skill on the international stage to bring glory to their fatherland.

Nigerian athletes clinched two gold medals on Wednesday. Bose Bejide set the tone by winning Nigeria’s first gold in the women’s 50 kg category, displaying her exceptional talent and determination.

Esther Nworgu added to Nigeria’s success by claiming gold in the women’s 41 kg category - an upgrade on the silver she won at the Dubai 2023 World Cup.

The momentum continued on Thursday as Thomas Kure dominated the competition in the men’s -65kg weight class, securing Nigeria’s third gold medal.

Roland Ezuruike showcased his strength and technique in the men’s -54kg category, securing the country’s fourth gold medal.

Nigerian athletes display strength and character

Team captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo expressed pride in the team's achievements, emphasizing that there is still more to come.

She highlighted the hard work and dedication of the lifters, emphasizing their commitment to success.

“As the captain of the team, I am very proud of all of them (lifters) because this is what we worked for and we are reaping the rewards now.

“We are not done yet, as there are still more events to compete in, and I believe more medals are still coming," she told Punch Sports.

Nigeria targets more medals

Reigning world champions Onyinyechi Mark and Kafila Almaruf are expected to add to Nigeria’s gold haul before the tournament concludes.

Additionally, other medal hopefuls, including Paralympic medallists Oluwafemiayo, Bose Omolayo, and Loveline Obiji, are poised to make their mark in upcoming events.
