Nigeria's U-18 women's handball team won 28-18 over Algeria on Saturday in Monastir, Tunisia, to kick off the 19th Africa Women's Youth Handball Championship with a victory.

Coach Shittu Adewunmi Agboola's team, who were competing for the first time in 23 years, didn't have it easy in the first half against the Algerians, as they ended the half with a pulsating 10-10 tie.

Coach Agboola, observing that the girls were making unneeded turnovers, made some tactical modifications that saw the team utilise the wings more in the second half, led by Taiwo Babatunde, and Nigeria blasted away their North African opponents, winning the half 18-8 and the match 28-10.

Taiwo Babatunde was named the match's MVP. Nigeria's next encounter is against Guinea on Sunday at 4 p.m.
