Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Jorginho in a shock move from London rivals Chelsea and here is why it makes sense.

Arsenal have completed the signing of Italian midfielder Jorginho from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth £10 million and a further £2 million in add-ons.

The Italian midfielder serves as an alternative to Moises Caicedo who was Arsenal's first choice until they got priced out of the deal by Brighton.

The transfer has been met with mixed reactions but adding Jorginho to the squad could turn out to be a masterstroke for Arsenal and here's why.

Jorginho offers Arsenal experience

Jorginho is not the young and exciting young signing Arsenal supporters were hoping for in Caicedo but he does offer them something the Brighton player cannot which is a proven track record.

Jorginho's proven track record and tested ability to kick it at the top with the very best has been proven multiple times in his career so far.

As talented as Caicedo is, the 21-year-old is still largely an unproven commodity with just 26 Premier League appearances in his career across the last two seasons.

That is precisely why Arsenal were sceptical of matching Brighton's high valuation which really is a function of the Ecuadorian's high potential.

Brighton's Moises Caicedo has been the subject of transfer bids from Arsenal

It is precisely why they were willing to take the risk on Jorginho, a player 10 years Caicedo's senior and armed with nearly five years of consistent action at the highest level for Chelsea.

“Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta stated in justification of the signing.

Arteta continued "Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here. We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club.”

Jorginho would wear the number 20 jersey at Arsenal

The Gunners are current;y flying high on top of the Premier League table with what is a relatively young squad and some title-winning experience like Jorginho has can only increase their chances of staying at the top.

Jorginho makes sense financially

The Italian midfield maestro cost Arsenal £12 million as he only had six months left on his deal with Chelsea which the Gunners took full advantage of to negotiate a bargain.

The transfer is really a low-risk situation because Jorginho only signed a one-and-half-year contract at the Emirates with an option for an extra year.

Arsenal confirm the signing of Jorginho

So in the event that the 31-year-old fails to hit the heights, Arsenal can just accept their minimal losses and let him leave in less than two years.

With all of that in consideration, it would have been unwise for Arsenal to not at least attempt to sign Jorginho and their efforts have been rewarded.

Getting a player with proven world-class ability and experience for the price they did in today's market is a great deal and there should be more optimism surrounding it.
