Justin Gaethje knocks out Dustin Poirier with head kick at UFC 291

Justin Gaethje not only exacted revenge on Dustin Poirier for his loss in 2018, but he also won the BMF title with an excellent head kick in the main event of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 291 early on Sunday, July 30, 2023.

2018 was the first encounter between "The Diamond" and "The Highlight" inside the Octagon.

Poirier won their first fight via technical knockout five years ago.

Both fighters wanted one more shot to compete for undisputed title going into their rematch at UFC 291 in Las Vegas.

Gaethje started in the first-round using kicks to gauge his chances on one of the biggest nights of his career at the Delta Center arena in Salt Lake City.

Since their previous encounter, Justin had gained experience, and he demonstrated it by going for volume right away and working on Poirier skillfully.

Gaethje's corner praised him for his work ethic in the middle of the octagon at the conclusion of the opening round and encouraged him to go out and finish the Poirier.

At 3:57 into the second round, Gaethje connected with a powerful straight left to seal the victory.

Poirer was knocked out by a powerful shot, and the fight was ended by a flawless left kick from Gaethje that went in between Poirer's neck and chin.

At the same arena, it was a replica of the Head Kick Leon Edwards did to knock out Nigeria's Kamaru Usman and become UFC welterweight champion.

Gaethje informed Joe Rogan after the fight that he hopes to challenge the winner of the lightweight title match between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira for the title.
