Ex-Barcelona defender Dani Alves' trial on alleged sexual assault set for February 2024

Dani Alves, the former Brazil and Barcelona defender, is set for a high-profile trial in February 2024 over sexual assault allegations.

The Incident and Arrest

According to BBC, the Former Brazil and Barcelona defender Dani Alves is scheduled to face trial from February 5-7, 2024, for an alleged sexual assault in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. 

Alves, 40, has been in pre-trial jail since January after his arrest for the incident. In August, Alves was formally indicted by an investigative judge.

The Barcelona-based court later confirmed there was sufficient evidence for a trial, based on statements from the victim, witnesses, and expert analyses.

Charges and Prosecution's Demands

The prosecution seeks a nine-year prison sentence for Alves. They have also requested a restraining order post-jail term and compensation of 150,000 euros to the alleged victim.

Following his arrest, Alves' contract with Mexican club UNAM was terminated. He had played for Brazil in the Qatar World Cup in 2022, marking a notable point in his football career.

Legal Framework in Spain

In Spain, rape allegations are investigated under the general accusation of sexual assault. Convictions in such cases can result in prison sentences ranging from four to fifteen years.
