Faiq Bolkiah is the world's richest footballer ever.

Faiq Bolkiah, the richest footballer in the world, has finally made his return to football after spending nearly a year sidelined with a devastating leg injury.

The 26-year-old, who plays for Ratchaburi FC in the Thai Premier League, suffered the brutal setback in February 2024 during a match against Police Tero.

Taking to social media, Bolkiah shared his relief at stepping back onto the pitch after an agonising 349 days on the sidelines.

“Almost 1 year since my injury. Feels great to be back out there,” he wrote on Instagram, accompanying a clip of himself coming on as a substitute in Ratchaburi’s 4-1 victory over Rayong FC last month.

Despite being 20 times wealthier than football megastars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Bolkiah’s career hasn’t hit the heights of his elite contemporaries.

His astonishing wealth stems from his lineage—he is a member of the House of Bolkiah and the nephew of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, one of the richest monarchs in the world.

His net worth, estimated at a staggering $20 billion, dwarfs that of Ronaldo, whose fortune sits at around $884.3 million and Lionel Messi at $850 million.

Yet, while CR7 and Messi have rewritten football’s record books, Bolkiah has struggled to make a name for himself on the pitch.

The California-born winger had spells at Southampton, Chelsea, and Leicester City’s youth academies before signing a professional contract with Maritimo in 2020.

His time in Portugal was short-lived, and he moved to Thailand, where he played for Chonburi before signing with Ratchaburi in 2023.

Bolkiah may not have reached Premier League superstardom, but he hasn’t lost touch with the big names he trained with during his time at Chelsea.

His former teammate, England international Reece James, showed his support after Bolkiah’s triumphant return to action.

Commenting on the Brunei international’s Instagram post, James wrote: “Happy for you, bro.”

Despite only making 16 appearances for Ratchaburi, with two goals to his name, Bolkiah remains focused on his passion for football.
