William Troost Ekong's remarkable performance at AFCON 2023, decision to donate future earnings to help aspiring young footballers in Akwa Ibom, and optimistic recovery from injury showcase his exceptional leadership on and off the field, cementing his status as a role model for aspiring athletes.

Super Eagles on-field captain William Troost Ekong has reportedly decided to give away future emoluments from playing for the national team, demanding they go towards developing football in his state of origin, Akwa Ibom.

Ekong, who was on the brink of quitting the Super Eagles, had a turnaround and led Nigeria to the AFCON 2023 final. His performance in the tourney was such that he was named MVP, and although he is currently injured, he is expected to remain in national team contention for more years to come.

However, according to a report today from Sports Radio Brilla FM, he will not receive payment for further services on the pitch for his nation; instead, what he is owed will be channelled towards helping children in Akwa Ibom State.

The report from Brilla FM reads thus: “William Troost-Ekong (M.O.N) has decided to give up all his future Super Eagles allowances and match bonuses, donating them towards helping kids in Akwa Ibom achieve their football dreams.”

"Everything is going well," Troost-Ekong stated.

"I'm actually slightly ahead of schedule in my rehab. I'm off the crutches, I'm working out in the gym and pool, and very eager to get back on the pitch and start building my fitness back up."

The PAOK centre back, currently recovering from injury, is eyeing a return to action in mid-May. His target aligns with the potential European Conference League Final, where Troost-Ekong hopes to be available for his club.
