Victor Wanyama will likely end the season without any piece of silverware after his CF Montreal were eliminated from the League’s Cup on Sunday morning.
Montreal were not in action this weekend but their hopes of qualifying for the Leagues Cup Round of 16 hinged on DC United beating Pumas UNAM but that went up in smoke when Wayne Rooney’s charges were thrashed 4-0 by the Mexican side.
Heading into the clash, DC United were leading the three-team standings with three points with Montreal second on two while Pumas had one. However, Montreal had already played their two games, winning 4-2 on penalties against Pumas following a 2-2 draw in regulation time, before losing 1-0 to DC United on Thursday.
A victory for DC United against Pumas in their second match after regulation time or in a penalty shootout would qualify Wanyama and his team-mates as the second-placed team in the group but tables turned as the Mexican side took command of the group with their huge win with Rooney’s charges going through as runners-ups.
As per Leagues Cup rules, winning in regulation time yields three points while victory on penalties comes with two.

The former Harambee Stars captain did not win the fitness race for the cup game with his side's qualification chances now slim.
It means Montreal are now out of contention for any cup success as they also lost the Canadian Championship title in June while they are 10th on the 15-team table in the MLS Eastern Conference with five matches of the regular season still to play.
Montreal lost 2-1 to Vancouver Whitecap in the Canadian Championship final on June 8, failing to reclaim the trophy that they had won in 2021.
The only remaining route for Wanyama and co is to win the MLS title which looks like a big stretch as they first need to finish in the top nine in the regular season before a rigorous playoff run starts and on current form, they would need a miracle to be crowed champions of America.
