Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi was in action for Nottingham Forest as they lost 2-1 to Brentford at the Community Stadium.

Forest, who are trying to avoid the relegation zone were hoping they can build from their recent victory against Brighton on Wednesday but were unable to hold on to their one-goal lead as two late goals from Brentford takes them closer to the relegation zone.

Awoniyi made the starting lineup but did not impress the manager, who later substituted him in the early minutes of the second half. Nottingham Forest opened the scoring from Danilo in the first half while Ivan Toney equalised for the home side towards the end of the game. Brentford later found the winner through Joshua Dasilva during injury time.

As it happened

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi was in the starting lineup for Nottingham Forest as Emmanuel Dennis was left on the bench. Thomas Frank, Brentford's manager also fielded a strong side with Ivan Toney starting up front.

The game started with Brentford calling the shots as they piled pressure on Forest's defence. However, they were unable to break the deadlock. Forest striker Awoniyi was unable to impose himself in the game and had few touches of the ball in the first half.

Towards the end of the first half, Nottingham Forest took the lead as Danilo fired the rebound inside the right post after the ball broke to him in the box with the first half coming to an end.

The second half continued without any chance from both sides. Due to the poor performance of the Nigerian striker Awoniyi, he was substituted in the 54th minute of the second half. Awoniyi failed to get a shot at goal and lost possession of the ball nine times before he was replaced by his fellow African Andre Ayew.

Brentford got the equaliser in the 82nd minute when Ivan Toney fired a daisy-cutter inside the right post from the free kick just outside the box. Thinking the game would end in a draw, Brentford got the winning goal through Josh Dasilva as he displayed brilliant individual skill before finding himself in a great position to strike from inside the box. He produced a terrific shot which went in off the right post, leaving Keylor Navas stranded as the referee blew the final whistle.

It was a bad day for Awoniyi and Emmanuel Denis who was left to watch his team lose from the bench. Nottingham Forest will be wallowing in pain as Brentford's defeat leaves them just one point above the relegation zone.
