Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong breaks long-standing AFCON record

Super Eagles of Nigeria defender and captain William Troost-Ekong has equaled a long-standing record held by the legendary Stephen Keshi.

Nigeria defeated South Africa on penalties to progress to the Africa Cup of Nations final after both sides played out an exhilarating 1-1 draw in 120 minutes. 

The Super Eagles opened the scoring through captain Troost-Ekong, his second goal in the tournament, following his strike against hosts Ivory Coast in the group stage. 

Troost-Ekong breaks AFCON record 

Troost-Ekong's goal against South Africa took him to 4 goals in AFCON tournaments making him the joint-highest goalscorer in the tournament's history, alongside another Super Eagles legend, the late great Stephen Keshi, who won the trophy as player and manager in 1994 and 2013.

Nigeria's progression to the AFCON 2023 final has been a testament to resilience, team spirit, and excellent defensive solidity, led by the excellent Troost-Ekong, who once again showed his leadership by stepping up to convert a spot-kick in regular time and the shoot-out.
