Rupia left Kenya Police for Tanzania this month and his new club feels he will smash the tallies managed by Kegere and Mayele when they were at Simba and Yanga respectively

Singida Fountain Gate FC have high hopes in their new signing Elvis Rupia who ditched Kenya Police for the Tanzanian Premier League outfit this month.

Rupia joined Singida on the back of a record-breaking campaign in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League when he scored 27 goals last season to win the Golden boot Award and smash the 47-year record of 26 goals set by Gor Mahia legend Maurice ‘Sonyi’ Ochieng.

With that in mind, his new club feels he can equally break the record of 23 set by former Gor Mahia striker, who is now his teammate at Singida, Meddie Kagere, set while he was playing for Simba SC two years ago, as well as last season’s Golden Boot winner Fiston Meyele who managed 18 for Yanga before leaving for Egyptian side Pyramids.

“He’s a good player and it should not be hard to cope because we have a lot of professionals in our teams from different countries,” Singida spokesman Hussein Masanza told Pulse Sports.

“We have had top scorers who are foreign like Meddie Kagere whose record has not been broken yet. We expect him to break Kagere’s record and even do better than Meyele. Being top scorer in Tanzania is a big thing because it brings respect to our team and also the player.”

Masanza also expressed his excitement at having both Rupia and Kagere in his team, saying they will complement each other and benefit from the increased competition.

Both strikers know each other having played for rival teams in Kenya as Kegere turned out for Gor Mahia when Rupia was playing for Nzoia Sugar.

The two are different profiles with Kegere able to play through the middle or out wide and also capable of dropping into space while Rupia is an out-and-out striker who is at his best playing with his back to goal while he is also blessed with great pace and power.

“It’s an advantage having Rupia and Kagere in the team and we expect positive competition. We have signed them because we want them to do big things for the club which will be a win-win for both parties,” added Masanza.

“We have title ambitions this season, we want to win the Premier League and advance to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.”

Singida appointed former Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp last week to replace Dutchman Van der Pluijm.
