CAF’s silence about the CHAN 2024 hosts could lend credence to the reports bearing in mind that the bid was opened concurrently with the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The Football Kenya Federation is considering bidding for the 2024 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN), initially scheduled for Mid-January to February next year, reports indicate.

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, opened the bids for the submissions of interested hosts in April and gave a May 6th deadline but according to reports, no country has shown interest so far.

On Wednesday, Kenyan newspaper People Daily reported that CAF and FKF officials have “been in talks for Kenya to host the finals”.

The paper claimed that FKF assured CAF officials informally that they can pull it off since the competition needs only four stadiums.

With the Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums under renovation, FKF believe that they could get two more from up country.

Silence

CAF’s silence about the CHAN 2024 hosts could lend credence to the reports bearing in mind that the bid was opened concurrently with the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The body confirmed on May 20th that Ivory Coast would host the Women’s Champions League to test the country’s readiness for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in January and February.

If Kenya beats the odds to win the rights early enough, it could work for the proponents of the 2027 AFCON Pamoja bid that was submitted jointly by the three biggest East African nations Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Rwanda is the only country to host a continental football final after staging the 2016 CHAN successfully.

Kenya was previously awarded the rights to host the AFCON in 1996 but failed, with South Africa snapping up the chance that led to their first and only continental medal.

The country was awarded the hosting rights for the CHAN 2018 but failed to deliver before CAF eventually stripped them of the rights and awarded them to Morocco after the second bidding.

CHAN is the downgrade of the Africa Cup of Nations; the tournament is designed to accommodate only the players featured in the domestic leagues of the participating nations.
