The Uruguayan’s 99th-minute goal created a new feat for the Premier League-chasing Reds.

Darwin Nunez created Premier League history for Liverpool in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. The centre-forward netted a 99th-minute winning goal for Jurgen Klopp’s troops after heading home Alexis Mac Allister’s cross to guarantee the Reds stay top of the league for another week at least.

What record did Darwin Nunez set with his 99th-minute winner?

According to Opta, Nunez’s header became the latest match-winning goal netted by a Liverpool player in Premier League history, and it became 10th overall for late strikes in the English top division since exact goal times became available.

Furthermore, it was the 43rd goal netted by substitutes for Liverpool in all competitions this season (21 goals, 22 assists), outdoing every other club in Europe’s major leagues in 2023-24, and it took the Reds to 18 strikes netted after the 90th minute since Klopp took charge in 2015.

However, it was not the Merseyside club’s latest Premier League goal, with Dirk Kuyt’s 102nd-minute penalty to secure a 1-1 draw at Arsenal in April 2011 the longest the club have had to wait for a goal and the second-latest in the league’s history.

What comes next for Liverpool and Nunez?

Nunez’s strike at the City Ground takes the forward to 10 Premier League goals in 25 appearances (16 starts), and Liverpool take on Sparta Prague in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday.

Afterwards, Klopp’s men host Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Anfield in a top-of-the-table Premier League clash on March 10.
