As Nigeria gear up for a two-legged friendly encounter against Cameroon ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Falcons have announced their squad for the matches against the Indomitable Lionesses.
In the roster for the matches against Cameroon are several familiar faces; however, legendary forward Asisat Oshoala was conspicuously absent.
Super Falcons set to face Cameroon in two-legged tie
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will begin their preparations for the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set for July 5, 2025, with a high-stakes friendly against Cameroon.
)
This will be their first game since a 2-1 loss to France in December 2023, ending an almost two-year spell of inactivity.
The two-legged tie will be played on May 31 at Remo Stars Stadium and June 3 at the newly upgraded MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.
Head coach Justin Madugu will use the matches to assess both local and foreign-based talent ahead of the tournament. Nigeria is grouped with Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.
Oshoala mising as Super Falcons announce squad
Ahead of the friendlies, the Super Falcons announced their 23-person squad, with recognised names like Michelle Alozie, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Rasheedat Ajibade, however, there was no room for Oshoala.
The Bay FC forward has only played seven matches for the NWSL club this year, starting only twice and failing to register a goal or an assists in these games.
It remains unclear if Oshoala has been excluded from the national team due to an injury, however, the 30-year-old ex-Barcelona star featured in Bay FC’s final match before the international break on the 16th of May, playing just over 20 minutes against Angel FC.
