Onyango is the most successful and decorated player in the history of the PSL, with ten league crowns, three with SuperSport United and seven with Mamelodi.

On a large scale, Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango has enjoyed his stay in South Africa, especially at Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, it has not been all rosy, and the former Uganda Cranes custodian has opened up on his most harrowing moments in the DSTV Premier Soccer League.

“Being sent out on loan from Sundowns to Bidvest Wits was tough,” Onyango told SuperSport TV in an interview before adding.

“I was at one time relegated with Mpumalanga Black Aces and also spent over two years without playing competitive football.”

“It was not easy at all at the start, but I am thankful that despite all these struggles, I never gave up. I kept going,” Onyango added.

The 38-year-old went to South Africa in 2006 and has stayed there for 17 years, earning legendary status in a foreign land.

Onyango is the most successful and decorated player in the history of the PSL, with ten league crowns, three with SuperSport United and seven with Mamelodi.

Such achievements and more have made him an adorable figure not only in South Africa but also in his native country Uganda where many young and aspiring footballers look up to him.

“The more I win league titles, it gives young ones (in Uganda) hope. Winning ten league titles in a different and difficult league with many ups and downs is incredible,” Onyango stated.

“This will continue inspiring young ones to say when things are tough, you do not give up; you keep going and try to win as much as you can.”

He noted: “It is a lesson for the young one, but of course, it is an inspiring story to tell the young kids and my children that you can win things when the situations are tough.”

A CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, MTN8, three Nedbank Cups, and two Telkom Knockout Cups are the other honours in Onyango’s name.
