Clubs without functional floodlights and backup power could be banned from using their stadiums next season, the NPFL warns in a tough new directive.

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued a strict directive to all participating clubs ahead of the 2025/26 season, emphasising the urgent need to upgrade stadium infrastructure or face losing the right to host home matches.

In its bid to clean up and standardise the football league, the league’s management has highlighted key requirements that clubs must meet to ensure their venues are fit for competition.

In an official statement shared widely on social media under the heading “RE: STADIUM INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIREMENTS FOR 2025/2026 NPFL SEASON,” the NPFL Board, management, and staff reminded clubs of the critical importance of having fully functional stadium facilities.

The two standout NPFL mandates are:

Enugu Rangers were dethroned.

Standard LED Floodlights: Clubs must install and maintain LED floodlights that meet the required illuminance levels to facilitate night matches.

Backup Generator Electricity: A reliable backup power source is mandatory to guarantee uninterrupted lighting during games, even if the main electricity supply fails.

The NPFL clarified that these, alongside other Grade A infrastructure standards, will be thoroughly inspected before the season begins.

Clubs failing to comply risk being barred from using their primary home grounds for the upcoming campaign.

“We urge you to prioritise these upgrades to ensure a smooth and successful season,” the league stated, encouraging clubs to reach out with any questions or concerns.

This move signals the NPFL’s commitment to raising professional standards and improving the matchday experience for players, officials, and fans.

Clubs are now under pressure to meet these infrastructural benchmarks or face significant consequences in the new season.

Remo Stars will be hoping to become the first team in recent history to retain the title after sealing a historic first in the 2024/25 campaign.
