How 'careless' Remo Stars paid price for wastefulness

Ikenne-based Remo Stars have managed just an average of 0.71 goals per game in the 2023 abridged NPFL season.

Coach Daniel Ogunmodede believes his Remo boys have themselves to blame after another dropped points in the NPFL.

Ogunmodede was left distraught after the Sky Blues were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Group A leaders Bendel Insurance at the weekend in Ikenne.

Frank Kwame opened his account for the club in the league when he put Remo ahead in the 16th minute but the lead only lasted 10 minutes before Divine Nwachukwu equalised for the visitors.

Insurance came from behind to maintain their unbeaten run in the abridged NPFL after snatching a share of the spoils away at Remo.

Remo boss rues missed chances

While Remo still has a chance to make it to the Super Six come the end of the season, the Ikenne side has struggled to score goals this season.

The Sky Blues have scored 10 goals in 14 matches this season in the NPFL, an average of just 0.71 goals in the football league.

Putting the ball in the net continues to be a big ask for the Blues, a problem their manager believes cost them in the game against Insurance.

In his reaction to the performance and result, the popular manager noted that his boys created enough chances to win but failed to take them.

“We played draw because we never took our chances,” coach Ogunmodede said. “We had a lot of chances but we were careless with the goal they (Bendel) scored. It was a quick restart and we were careless (and) slept off.”

Speaking further on his side's performance, Ogunmodede, who tried to pick some positives from the game, added that it was two points dropped for his stars.

“It’s always like that, it’s three consecutive draws but don’t forget we have not lost in the second round,” he added.

NPFL: Remo Stars vs Bendel Insurance
Remo Stars have scored just 10 goals in the NPFL this season.

“It’s two points lost, we needed that so much to complement what we got in the last away game but unfortunately we couldn’t get it. It’s football and there is nothing we can do.”

What the match means

With the draw against Bendel, Remo has drawn three successive games in the NPFL, with the latest against Insurance seeing them stay fifth on the table in Group A.

The Blues are, however, still in the hunt for a place in the Super six despite the setback as they are just three points behind third-placed Akwa United on the table.
