How it happened

Brentford took the game to their hosts early on as Aaron Hickey had the best chance of the opening exchanges but he could only fire an effort straight at Nick Pope.

Newcastle did eventually awaken and showed some life as the half wore on, with Bruno Guimarães’ downward header at the back post from close range was scrambled away by Mark Flekken.

Newcastle thought they had opened the scoring when Callum Wilson fired home from close range but referee Craig Pawson disallowed the goal due to a foul in the buid up.

The hosts finally got their breakthrough and it came from the penalty spot. Wilson stepped up to convert and earn a priceless 3 points.
