Mourinho slams 'outdated' football laws amid Dybala suspension

Roma manager Jose Mourinho criticises football laws.

AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho has hit at a football law that he finds archaic as it keeps his star player Paolo Dybala and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini out of the first game of the season against Salernitana.

Roma start league campaign without two stars

The last Europa League finalists start their league campaign tomorrow against Salernitana, and they will strive to get all three points as they look to start their journey to better last season’s 6th-place finish.

They will, however, have to face Granata without two of their best players, Dybala and Pellegrini, as they carry over a one-game suspension from last season.

The duo each received their fifth yellow card of the season in the final game, a 2-1 win against Spezia, and will now have to serve the suspension in the opening game of the 2023/24 campaign.

What Mourinho said

The AS Roma boss is in disagreement with this rule, calling it archaic, as his statement implies that players should not carry over punishment from a previous campaign into a new one.

"Against Salernitana, it will be a difficult game,” Mourinho said, per Iusport.com.

“We will miss Pellegrini and Dybala, but it is useless to repeat it. The world of football sometimes surprises me because it is many years behind schedule: starting a competition where the objective is to reach as high as possible Having players penalized for accumulating cards from last season seems outdated to me.”
