Moses Shummah: The young Harambee Stars sensation earning rave reviews at Kakamega Homeboyz

Shummah had an end of season to remember, not just making his debut and scoring for Harambee Stars, but also being named most valuable player as Homeboyz lifted their maiden FKF Cup.

Moses Shummah is a name that has lately become household among people with a keen interest in Kenyan football.

For casual observers, his name first emerged when made a big impression on his debut for Harambee Stars against Pakistan in the Mauritius Four Nations Series Last June: The goal that ultimately proved to be the side’s only one of the campaign.

However, for people with a keener interest in local football, Shummah, 20,  is a fast-rising name that is making the waves all over the media, something that was probably not the case three months ago.

He played an integral part in helping Abana Abeingo make history, not just by lifting their first ever FKF Cup title, but also making them qualify for their maiden continental showpiece next season.

Shummah believes that winning the Mozzart Bet Cup is not enough, and that that was just the beginning of a long and successful journey in a Homeboyz shirt, starting next season.

“The goal of the team is to do well continentally. We want to make history as a team, and also individually,” Shummah told Pulse Sports.

“However, I am sure that the coach is coming up with strategies to prepare us for the task at hand next year, knowing that we will play against better teams at that stage.”

Most fans may look at the fact that he scored just six goals for both club and country in 2022/2023 and assume he is just an ordinary striker, but Shummah was named most valuable player after playing an integral part in the run in to laying his hands on that trophy.

His ability to hold the ball up and link the play is just a joy to watch, as it allows willing runners like Moses Mudavadi and Kevin Amwayi to get into spaces where they can run in behind before scoring. His teamplay is earning him plaudits everywhere, and he says putting the team first ultimately leads to individual accolades.

“Being more of a team player shows that someone puts the team first before his own interests. For me, if someone I am playing next to gets a chance to win, I have also won. If I get the chance to assist him, I will assist him, and when the team wins, it is something huge.

“In the final, I was only focused on making sure the team won because that was the major prize at stake. When you are positive that way, everything pans out. Had I not been a team player, I probably would not even  have won the individual award.”

However, Shummah has shown his ability to be tough to handle against opponents. In the final against Tusker, he struck the post within the opening ten minutes as Homeboyz asserted their authority from the first minute to the last minute. However, the 20 year old believes it is only a matter of time before he starts banging them in consistently.

“That moment hurt me. Had that ball found the back of the net, a lot of things would have changed, we probably would have won by a larger margin, but the important thing is that we won.”

Homeboyz are about to return for pre-season as they anticipate to take part in a whole new level of competition, with the CAF Confederation Cup draw set to take place next week.
