Consequently, the Red Devils have shifted their focus to a possible alternative who is in Italy.

Benfica have reportedly rejected Manchester United's player-plus-cash deal for striker Goncalo Ramos.

Out of favour left-back Alex Telles was to be used in the exchange deal, but Bnefica rejected the offer from the Premier League side. The Red Devils are now set to ramp up interest in Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund after Benfica dismissed their bid for Ramos.

Erik ten Hag wants a bolstered squad ahead of the next season and has already signed Mason Mount from Chelsea for an initial £55 million. They are believed to be closing in on a deal to sign Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Onana, who is expected to be David De Gea's replacement, is said to have agreed personal terms with the former Ajax goalkeeper, although Inter Milan are said to have rejected United's initial £38.5 million bid.

Their interest in Hojlund and Ramos is understood, as Anthony Martial is the only specialist center-forward they have. The French international missed 29 games last season because of injuries and ended up scoring just nine goals; thus, the club ended up overrelying on Marcus Rashford.

Ramos was a key player for the Portuguese champions last season, as he scored 27 goals and provided 12 assists in 47 games across all competitions. At the World Cup in Qatar, he was outstanding, as he also scored a hat trick against Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Newcastle and PSG had been linked with a move for the striker, who currently has a release clause worth €120 million in his contract.

After the reported rejection by Benfica, United's bid to sign a striker is set to be bolstered by Hojlund's interest in making a move from Atalanta to the Premier League. It is reported that the Dane has already agreed on personal terms with the Red Devils.
