The coach was expected to jet back into the country and continue with contract extension talks.

AFC Leopards Secretary General Gilbert Andugu has said Patrick Aussems' resignation as head coach caught them flatfooted.

After leaving the club before the season ended, Aussems confirmed he would no longer continue in his role as the club's head coach three days ago, a move that has now been described as shocking.

"To be honest with you, all the members of AFC Leopards’ committee were shocked to learn that Aussems had taken the decision to quit the club," said Andugu.

"It was shocking because before he requested to travel home for family issues, we had discussed with him his contract situation, which he gladly confirmed he would return to sign and continue with his role."

Aussems, who stuck with the club despite numerous problems, did not exactly reveal why he was no longer interested in signing a contract extension.

"For personal and private reasons, I won’t be able to renew my contract with AFC Leopards! Thanks to my players, my staff, and the incredible fans for the last 2 years! I wish Ingwe all the best!" Aussems revealed this when he confirmed he had left the club.

While in charge at the Den, he operated with a lean squad because the club was banned from signing new players. There was also friction between him and the club due to unpaid salaries.

Ingwe are now set to start the process of hunting for a new head coach, with Anthony 'Modo' Kimani and Ken Kenyatta, now at Talanta FC, understood to be leading the race.

Should Kimani be appointed, he would be making a return to a club he coached before he left to take over at Bandari. He parted ways with the Dockers in March, when they were eliminated by AFC Leopards in the FKF Cup.
