Lukaku hits at racism in Italy

Inter forward Romelu Lukaku speaks out against Racism in Serie A.

Lukaku has taken to his social media to condemn racist abuse which he was allegedly subjected to by Juventus fans in the 1-1 Coppa Italia semi-final first-leg draw between Inter and the Old Lady.

Lukaku was controversially sent off during the game for his celebration, as he gestured to silent Juventus fans who were seen to have used racial expletives against him, after scoring a penalty for Inter that equalised the game.

The striker took to his Instagram account today to condemn the action, and the recurrent nature of it, while calling for the league to take stronger measures against racists and racism.

Lukaku claimed to have faced such ill-treatment in his first stint at Inter in 2019, as well as during the game against Juventus and says if steps are not taken to curb the act of hate, the beautiful game of football risks being ruined.  

 "History repeats itself. I've been through it in 2019... and 2023 again,” Lukaku said, via his Instagram.

 “I hope the league really takes real action this time because this beautiful game should be enjoyed by all... Thanks for the messages of support. F*cking racism."

The abuse 

As we reported in detail earlier, In the fifth minute of stoppage time, the Belgium attacker on loan to the Nerazurri scored from the penalty spot to salvage a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final match.

After scoring Inter Milan's equaliser against Juventus on Tuesday night, Romelu Lukaku was subjected to racial abuse from Juventus Fans. Afterwards, due to his celebration, he received a second yellow card and was sent off.

After the Belgian attacker equalized, Juventus supporters became angry with him, leading to racial taunts.

But, before and after he took the penalty, Juventus fans behind the goal could be heard making monkey noises as well as the Italian translations of "f*** off" and "f***ing monkey."
