Dutch national team captain Virgil Van Dijk comments on Louis Van Gaal claim that the World Cup was rigged for Messi.

Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk has reacted to Louis Van Gaal's comments that the World Cup in Qatar last year was rigged for Lionel Messi to win.

Van Gaal was the coach of Van Dijk and the rest of his Netherlands teammates at the tournament. They were knocked out by the Albiceleste in the quarterfinals in an emotionally charged encounter.

What Van Gaal said

As Pulse Sports reported, Van Gaal said the following about Argentina’s World Cup win:

"I don't really want to say much about it. When you see how Argentina gets the goals and how we get the goals, and how some Argentina players overstepped the mark and were not punished, then I think it's all a premeditated game."

After journalists probed even further, the 72-year-old said, "I mean everything I say. That Messi should become the world champion? I think so, yes."

What Van Dijk said

The former Manchester United boss left the role as coach of the Oranje after the World Cup, and Ronald Koeman was hired to replace him.

Players of the Netherlands national team converged for the international break, and the captain of the side, Van Dijk, was asked about the comments of his former coach.

The Liverpool defender disagreed with Van Gaal, saying he does not share his opinion, nor does the rest of the squad.

“Van Gaal’s words about Messi? He can say what he wants; it’s his opinion, but I do not agree with him, and I don’t share the same opinion.”
