The Super Eagles, who currently sit third in Group C with 11 points, are under pressure to secure maximum points after a stuttering campaign that has left their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

What Chelle said

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Chelle emphasised the importance of beginning the game with purpose and energy, warning that any lapse could prove costly.

“Everybody can't go to the World Cup because this is football; anything can happen. It could be the weather, the referee, or even an injury,” Chelle said.

He continued, “That’s why we must remain fully focused on our objective, which is to win this match. We have to start well, play with intensity and aggression, and make sure we take our chances.”

The Franco-Malian tactician, who took charge earlier this year, also praised Lesotho for their organisation and discipline, describing them as a team capable of causing problems if underestimated.

“Lesotho have a good coach and a structured team. They are not an easy side to play against. We need to respect them but at the same time impose our game from the first whistle,” he noted.

Chelle reiterated that the team’s mindset must be fixed on securing all three points, regardless of the challenges.

“Our goal is simple: to win. We know what is at stake and what the fans expect. It’s about belief, discipline, and execution. If we stay focused and play our football, the result will come,” he stated.

Nigeria’s campaign has been far from convincing, with just two wins, five draws, and one defeat from eight matches. The Super Eagles were forced to a 1–1 draw in the reverse fixture in Uyo last year after Semi Ajayi rescued a point following an early setback.

Now, with only two matches remaining, victory in Polokwane is non-negotiable if the three-time African champions hope to overtake group leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa.

Chelle’s men will look to top scorer Victor Osimhen to inspire the attack, while key players such as Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Wilfred Ndidi are also expected to play pivotal roles.
