Victor Boniface's Bayer Leverkusen have now extended their unbeaten run to 26 matches across competitions.

Bayer Leverkusen kicked off 2024 in dramatic style thanks to a late winner from Exequiel Palacios

The defensive midfielder netted an injury time winner to inspire Leverkusen to a deserved 1-0 win over a spirited Augsburg, with Nigeria’s Victor Boniface missing with an injury.

The 23-year-old suffered a serious knee injury while with Nigeria ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, slated for Cote d’Ivoire.

However, in his absence, his teammates got the job done to maintain their place at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to Argentina’s Palacios.

Xabi Alonso’s Werkself looked set to start of the new year with a share of the spoils after finding their host a hard nut to break.

But in added time, 26-year-old Palacios would be the hero as he scored in added time to give Leverkusen another victory.

It was a vital three points for manager Boniface's side, with Palacios ensuring Bayer sealed a fifth consecutive victory across competitions.

With Boniface set to be on the sidelines for the next three months after going under the knife following a knee problem, Xabi and Leverkusen would look to build on this late win as they look to maintain their place at the top of the table.
