Everton manager Frank Lampard provided a positive update on the injured Nigerian midfielder.

Alex Iwobi could be available for Everton’s next game just one week after picking up what looked like a serious injury.

Manager Frank Lampard gave a positive update on his star midfielder, hinting that the Nigerian international could be available for selection in this weekend’s game against Southampton.

Iwobi was on the receiving end of a horror tackle from Tyrell Malacia last week in Everton’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United but it appears he is set for a swift return.

Lampard gave an optimistic update on Iwobi’s injury situation at the pre-match press conference for Everton’s home game against Southampton on Saturday.

“Alex is a lesser injury than what we thought so well see in the morning if he’s ready to play tomorrow,” Lampard’s message posted on Everton’s Instagram page reads.

That implies that the Nigerian midfielder will undergo a fitness test to determine whether or not he will be available for the game.

Alex Iwobi was stretchered off injured and in tears at Old Trafford

The news is particularly surprising as it comes exactly a week after Iwobi was stretchered off in tears at Old Trafford where he suffered what looked like a long-term injury.

The Super Eagles star has started all 18 Premier League games for Everton so far and played the full 90 minutes in all but one of those games, returning one goal and five assists.

Everton will host Southampton in a 4pm Premier League kickoff and the Toffees would like to have one of their most important players available for this relegation six-pointer.
