Klopp outraged over VAR decisions in Liverpool’s win over Burnley

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool's manager, was left fuming over what he described as "insane" refereeing decisions, despite Liverpool's victory over Burnley that sent them to the top of the Premier League.

In a game marked by controversy, Liverpool secured a win at Turf Moor, but not without contentious moments involving VAR decisions.

The main point of contention for Klopp was the disallowing of Harvey Elliott’s second-half goal. VAR official Simon Hooper ruled the goal out, deeming Mo Salah, who was in an offside position, to have interfered with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford’s line of sight.

Klopp, visibly frustrated, said, as reported by The Sun, “They will tell us again it’s an offside situation or whatever. It’s insane honestly. This man, if he never played football then it can happen.”

The Controversy Explained

Klopp argued that Salah was pushed into the offside position, questioning the interpretation of the rules by the officials. “You think ‘offside rule, let me see, page seven, there’s somebody between him and the goalie’ — that’s ridiculous.

We all need referees but we need them with the right interpretation of the rules. How can you make this situation not a goal? That’s a clear goal,” Klopp added.

Liverpool's woes with VAR didn't end there. Cody Gakpo also had a goal disallowed due to a foul by Darwin Nunez on Charlie Taylor.

Klopp’s remarks are set to increase scrutiny on Hooper, who was already in the spotlight for his handling of a recent Manchester City-Tottenham match.

Despite these setbacks, Klopp expressed satisfaction with Liverpool's overall performance and their position in the league. “Forty-two points.

That is really pleasing, really cool. The first part of the season is done. It was absolutely all right what we did. Not perfect, but all right,” he said.

The Importance of Jota and Nunez

With Mo Salah soon departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, Klopp highlighted the importance of Jota and Nunez in the team’s success.

Praising Jota’s impact, Klopp remarked, “Diogo is an incredibly important player for us, having him changes the whole dynamic. The goal he scored was a goal of a boy full of conviction. The goal for Darwin was as important.”

Burnley's Struggle Continues

On the other side, Burnley's coach Vincent Kompany remained optimistic despite the team's ninth home defeat. He saw positive aspects in the team’s performance, saying, “We had our moments — the team fought and was alive and entertaining. It just lacks a final touch. I’ve no doubt they’ll make the step.”

As Liverpool continues their title push, the controversy surrounding VAR decisions remains a hot topic in the Premier League.
