Barcelona legend has backed Lamine Yamal for 2025 Ballon d’Or

Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov has thrown his weight behind rising star Lamine Yamal as the leading candidate to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or, praising the 17-year-old’s immense talent while acknowledging strong competition from Paris Saint-Germain stars Marquinhos and Vitinha.

With the Ballon d’Or gala scheduled for September, Yamal’s performances after the summer break could solidify his chances.

The teenage sensation will face stiff competition from not just Marquinhos and Vitinha, but also teammates like Raphinha, and fellow former Barcelona star Ousmane Dembélé, now at PSG.

What Stoichkov said

Speaking on Carrusel Deportivo, Stoichkov who won the Ballon d’Or in 1994 was full of admiration for Yamal, declaring, “If he wins it, I'll give it to him personally.”

Yamal dazzled in a historic season for Barcelona, contributing heavily to their La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España triumphs.

If he wins the Ballon d'Or in September, he would become the youngest player in history to claim the prestigious honour surpassing Ronaldo Nazário, who won it at age 21 in 1997.

“Lamine Yamal is a very young boy who has a long way to go… But I really enjoy watching him because he has so many interesting qualities," he said.

Stoichkov's endorsement puts Yamal in the global spotlight, and if the Barca youngstar maintains his current form, he could become the youngest Ballon d'Or winner.
