Nigeria clinched the Unity Cup title on Saturday after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win over Jamaica, following a 2-2 draw in regulation time at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.

What Chelle said

Speaking after the match, a visibly elated Chelle described the win as a landmark moment in his budding coaching career and a springboard for greater achievements with the national team.

“When I was a player, I won trophies, but this is my first as a coach,” Chelle told Oga Nla Media.

He added, “In reality, this is my first trophy as a coach, and I hope with this trophy, I can bring more trophies for Nigeria.”

Although the Unity Cup is not a major competition, the win serves as a confidence booster for Chelle and his squad, especially as they continue preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations later in the year.

The Franco-Malian coach, who only recently took charge of the team, has now gone unbeaten in his first three games with two wins and a draw — a start he hopes to build upon as he sets his sights on delivering long-term success for Nigeria.

“We’re just beginning. We’ve had limited time together, but the spirit is strong, and the players are committed. This trophy is just the beginning,” Chelle added.

With the Unity Cup now in the bag, attention shifts to Nigeria’s next round of fixtures, where Chelle will look to further stamp his authority on the squad.
