Omala reveals that the defender made it difficult to express himself the first time he played against him.

Gor Mahia stalwart Benson Omala has revealed the toughest opponent he has faced in his career as an FKF Premier League player.

Omala enjoyed a meteoric rise to becoming a professional football player, enrolling in season one of the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom tournament, which earned him the opportunity to join Western Stima in 2019.

It was at Stima where he famously won the SJAK Player of the Month for November in 2019 while as a form four student at Kisumu Day Secondary School after a good run of form that month, which eventually earned him a move to Gor Mahia, the club he has plied his trade with over the last four years, although he briefly had a spell in Sweden.

Omala has revealed that the toughest player he faced while still, a student is his new teammate Kennedy ‘Vidic’ Onyango, who signed from Nairobi City Stars in July.

“It was my first season while still a player at Western Stima. We played against Homeboyz and I was facing Vidic - Kennedy Onyango, we are now together here at Gor Mahia,” Omala told Sports Eye Sports.

“It was hard because he had the height and the body and I was still at high school, so I feel he was finding it very easy to mark me because I was still small. He is the toughest opponent I have faced.”

Omala has drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland due to his goal-scoring prowess last season, something he says has “motivated him” to want to play at the highest level like the Norwegian.

“It motivates me. He is playing at the top level. As an upcoming player, I want to be like him, just scoring goals.”

The 22-year-old admits it will be a tough season ahead, revealing he needs to work on preserving his energy levels in order to help him finish with a goalscoring run towards the end of the next campaign, which cost him the Golden Boot this year.

“I want to work on having the energy to finish the league in order to become top scorer next time and as a striker, I have to have targets to help me for the upcoming season.

“It will be a tough season because winning the league twice needs a lot of work put in. We also need to be together as a team to put more work towards retaining the league.
