STARS ABROAD: Leicester City on the verge of signing Kenyan midfielder

The winger is in demand with a number of English Championship sides chasing after his signature.

Despite recently attending trials at Sunderland, Kenyan midfielder Silko Thomas Otieno is on the verge of joining Championship side Leicester City.

According to the Evening Standard, the 2016 Premier League champions are in advanced talks to sign the midfielder after he ran down his contract with Chelsea.

Otieno is available on the Bosman rule and will not cost Leicester a dime to add him to their ranks as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League following their shock relegation.

The versatile midfielder featured for Sunderland’s Under-21s side as they battled their way to a 4-4 draw in a pre-season friendly against National League North club King’s Lynn Town.

Should the deal materialise he will join fellow Kenyan and 15-year-old Brooklyn Mwadime Kazungu who is currently on the books of Leicester.

The former Blues midfielder can play on either wing, as well as operate as a makeshift wing-back which could make him a decent squad player for the Foxes.

Otieno is still open for a Harambee Stars call up having never featured for the senior side but has represented England at under-15 and under-18 levels during his career, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.

The midfielder was on the verge of joining newly promoted Premier League side Sheffield United in the January transfer window before the club was slapped with a transfer embargo.

Reports however indicate that Otieno could join the Leicester Under 21 side before being gradually promoted to the senior side.
