Omala scored 26 league goals last season, but was beaten to the award by Kenya Police's Elvis Rupia.

Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala has revealed what he will do in order to clinch the FKFPL golden boot at the end of the new league season.

Omala scored a record-equalling 26 goals this season but was pipped to the award by Kenya Police’s Elvis ‘Machapo’ Rupia, who scored 27 goals, the highest in the history of the country’s top flight league.

Omala believes the battle for the top scorer award  this season will be more difficult than last season, but believes he has what it takes to win it.

“It will be hard for everyone but as a striker, my main aim is to become a topscorer which is what I want to do this season,” Omala told Sports Eye Kenya.

“Last season, I missed it by a whisker of just a goal. This season, I will work on the things I got wrong and maintain the things I got right.”

Omala has praised the impact of Northern Irish tactician Johnathan McKinstry for enabling him to elevate his goal scoring prowess, as his numbers took a dramatic rise to the top last season.

“He has sharpened me in one or two areas because in the previous season, I was dropping too much to come and pick the ball and go up.

“He told me that as a striker, you have to stay there, make runs into the box and score. You do not have to go back to the middle to pick up the ball.

“That is what happened and it made my goals go up.”

The 22-year-old has spoken for every Gor Mahia player by expressing disappointment at missing out on this year’s CAF Champions League campaign, saying that the situation was out of their hands.

“We worked for it. We wanted to play in the CAF because we missed playing in that top level. We gave it our best shot and won the league but unfortunately, we will not be able to be playing in the competitions.

“It is not down to us as players but down to the office.”

Gor Mahia will play Sofapaka in their opening FKFPL match on August 26.
