The global football governing body officially lifted the suspension on Congo's football federation, bringing an end to their recent standoff.

Why Congo was banned by FIFA

The drama began back in February when FIFA, in coordination with CAF, dropped the hammer on Congo’s football federation (FECOFOOT) due to what it called “third-party interference.”

According to FIFA, Congo’s sports ministry interfered with FECOFOOT's operations, reportedly even taking over its headquarters and some sporting facilities.

That sort of move contravenes FIFA’s statutes, which strictly prohibit any outside meddling in the affairs of national federations.

The decision was swift, and Congo was barred from all international competitions, alongside Pakistan, who were also banned for governance-related issues.

FIFA gives green light as Congo meets demands

Following the initial ban, FIFA demanded a clear list of conditions to reverse the suspension. Chief among them was the return of FECOFOOT's full operational control, including access to its own headquarters.

After months of back-and-forth and diplomatic nudging, FIFA confirmed on Wednesday that Congo has fulfilled all its conditions.

Congo’s sports ministry appears to have finally backed off, handing the reins back to the rightful football authorities.

This compliance paved the way for FIFA to lift the suspension, just as it had recently done for Pakistan under similar circumstances.
