The 26-year-old, who has established himself as Harambee Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper, limped off in the 14th minute during the side’s 2-2 draw with Russia.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Bryne Omondi is expected to be ruled out for an undisclosed period after sustaining an injury during Kenya’s 2-2 draw with Russia in a friendly match played in Antalya, Turkey.

Omondi limped off in the opening stages of the match after suffering an injury while attempting to make a save in vain when Russia’s Alexander Sobolev opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the match.

He did carry on, but withdrew in the 14th minute after being unable to shake off his injury as he was in clear discomfort.

Pulse Sports can authoritatively confirm that Omondi is now set to undergo surgery to correct the injury in order to help his recovery, but it is not expected to keep him out for a long time, although he could miss Kenya’s opening two World Cup qualifying matches against Gabon and Seychelles.

“It is quite a serious injury but not that bad. I am supposed to undergo surgery because I sustained a fracture on my left leg,” Omondi said in a chat.

The news will come as a huge blow for Kenya, as Omondi had started to establish himself as a reliable first-choice goalkeeper since making his debut against Pakistan back in June.

He has since earned five caps for the country and has had a 2023 to remember as he established himself as KCB’s first-choice goalkeeper since displacing Gabriel Andika.

Omondi is known for his completeness. He can come for areal balls easily, underpinning his ability to command his area well, is calm and composed on the ball with excellent distribution, and is an excellent shot-stopper.
