After an extended period without a club, Oghenekaro Etebo is set to sign for a Turkish club

After a prolonged period of uncertainty, Nigerian midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo's journey to find a new club seems to be reaching a positive conclusion.

Etebo, known for his exploits with the Super Eagles during the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, encountered challenges in his club career, leading to a prolonged spell without a team.

Failed stint at Aris Saloniki

During the previous season, Etebo showcased his talent during a loan spell at Greek side Aris Saloniki from Stoke City. Despite impressing with 28 appearances across all competitions, his hopes of a permanent move were dashed due to an unfortunate injury.

With his contract with Stoke City expiring in July, Etebo entered the 2023/24 season as a free agent, seeking a new opportunity to reignite his career.

Near Miss with Genclerbirligi

Gençlerbirliği, a Turkish club, came close to securing Etebo's services during the winter transfer window. However, concerns over his fitness led to the deal falling through, prompting the club to sign another midfielder, James Lea Siliki, instead.

Despite the setback, recent reports suggest that Gençlerbirliği remains interested in Etebo. Negotiations are underway for the Nigerian midfielder to join the club in Ankara for the upcoming season, provided he demonstrates his fitness.

Prospects for the Future

Should Etebo prove his readiness to return to action, he is poised to add depth and quality to Gençlerbirliği's squad. At 28 years old, Etebo brings experience from his stints with various clubs across Portugal, Spain, Turkey, and England.

Etebo's impending move to Gençlerbirliği marks the end of a challenging period for the talented midfielder. With negotiations underway and prospects looking promising, both Etebo and his new club are hopeful for a successful partnership in the upcoming season.
