Ex-Super Eagles boss Rohr calls on FIFA to deduct points from South Africa amidst World Cup qualifying tussle
The 2026 World Cup qualifying is set to resume next month, and controversy is brewing in Group C, where Nigeria is vying for a spot alongside South Africa and Benin Republic, among others.
The Super Eagles' chances of qualifying for the World Cup hang in the balace, but could be aided by a rallying cry from a familiar face.
Rohr calls for fairness
Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, now helming Benin Republic, has called on FIFA to take immediate action regarding South Africa's alleged use of an ineligible player in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.
“I am calling on @FIFAcom to make themselves clear on the points situation in our 2026 #FIFAWorldCup qualifying group, as @BafanaBafana used an ineligible player (@TebohoMokoena28) in a World Cup qualifier, which means they must lose three points and three goals to the opponent… pic.twitter.com/RidVtrFuqn

Speaking in an interview with Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, the German tactician said, "I am calling on FIFA to make themselves clear on the points situation in our 2026 World Cup qualifying group, as South Africa used an ineligible player in a World Cup qualifier, which means they must lose three points and three goals to the opponent of the said match, Lesotho.”
He noted the need for clarity and fairness in the qualifying process, saying, "With the remaining qualifiers set to begin soon, it is imperative, in the interest of fair play, for all the teams in our World Cup qualifying group to know where they legitimately stand, before we start to play."
FIFA urged to act quickly and decisively
Rohr expressed his surprise at FIFA's slow response to the matter, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution.
"I am surprised that FIFA is taking too long to resolve what is a very straightforward matter. It should and must be resolved without further delay," he said.
As the stakes are high, Nigeria and other teams in the group are eagerly awaiting FIFA's decision on the matter.
The Super Eagles are currently 4th in Group C, six points behind group leaders South Africa and one point behind Rohr’s Benin.
A three-point deduction for Bafana Bafana would see the group open up, especially as Nigeria will still face South Africa before the qualifiers round up.
