Former Nigerian international Godwin Okpara has praised Ademola Lookman's decision to join Atletico Madrid over Turkish side Fenerbahce.
Lookman's future at Atalanta had been the subject of intense speculation, which culminated in a winter transfer following his stellar performances for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
His form attracted significant interest from clubs across Europe, with Atletico Madrid and Fenerbahce emerging as the frontrunners for his signature.
Reports suggested that Fenerbahce were leading the chase, having reportedly met Atalanta's asking price, but Lookman opted for a move to Spain, prioritizing the prestige of La Liga over a bigger salary.

Okpara glad with Lookman’s move to Spain
Okpara, a former defender for Paris Saint-Germain and Standard Liège, firmly believes Lookman made the correct career choice by moving to one of Europe's top leagues.
In an interview with Footy-Africa, Okpara was unequivocal in his support for the transfer. "Just compare Fenerbahçe and Atlético Madrid," he said. "Even a blind man wouldn’t choose Fenerbahçe."
"Not that it’s a bad league, quite the opposite. But it’s by being in the spotlight that you progress, where the whole world sees you. And that’s where La Liga comes in. It’s the ideal league for him," Okpara explained.
"The whole world watches La Liga. Only two people watch the Turkish league. So, I mean, nobody would choose Fenerbahçe over going to Atlético Madrid. It was the right choice... I’m very happy for him. And it’s a good thing for our country."
The 28-year-old winger has signed a contract with Atletico Madrid that runs until June 2030 and has already started to make his mark.
Lookman enjoyed a dream debut, scoring a goal and providing an assist in a dominant 5-0 Copa del Rey win against Real Betis.
Atletico Madrid is scheduled to host Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals on Thursday, where the Nigerian will be eager to continue his impressive form.
