The Red Devils conceded 28 shots in Thursday’s wild 4-3 defeat at Stamford Bridge, seeing the Manchester giants lead an undesirable statistic in 2024.

Manchester United were beaten by Chelsea on Thursday, ending the Red Devils’ seven-year undefeated Premier League run against the Blues.

Chelsea 4-3 Manchester United

Goals from Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer saw Mauricio Pochettino’s team race into an early two-goal lead, but familiar defensive mishaps re-emerged as the Red Devils netted twice through Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes to go in level at half-time.

The Argentine profited from Antony’s exquisite assist in the 67th minute to put the Manchester giants 3-2 up, and Erik ten Hag’s men looked primed to extend their undefeated Premier League run against Chelsea with the game in its concluding minutes.

However, a clumsy Diogo Dalot foul on Noni Madueke saw another penalty awarded to the hosts in second-half stoppage time. The young Englishman held his nerve to beat Andre Onana from 12 yards for the second time before scoring another moments later after a Scott McTominay deflection to complete his hat-trick, thus sealing Chelsea’s comeback.

Ten Hag’s Red Devils keep allowing opponents to shoot at their goal

Thursday’s game saw the Manchester giants concede a staggering 28 attempts for the duration of proceedings, taking their Premier League total for the season to 526.

According to Opta, 225 of those shots faced have come in 2024, outdoing every other club in Europe’s big-five leagues. The opponents faced in that time include Tottenham Hotspur (16 shots conceded), Wolves (16), West Ham (22), Aston Villa (23), Luton Town (22), Fulham (17), Manchester City (27), Everton (23), Brentford (31) and Chelsea (28).

What comes next for Manchester United?

Ten Hag’s men still have a mathematical chance of supplanting Spurs, whom they trail by nine points with eight games to play, with fifth place potentially guaranteeing an extra Champions League spot if English clubs left in European competition fare well in the latter stages.

Manchester United host title-chasing Liverpool on April 7 and travel to Bournemouth six days after before their FA Cup semi-final clash with Coventry City on April 21.
