Cyriel Dessers' impressive performance against Ghana has got fans calling for him to replace Victor Boniface in future Super Eagles squads.
In the wake of Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana in the Unity Cup, Super Eagles fans have one clear message for head coach Eric Chelle.
After Cyriel Dessers delivered yet another classy performance, scoring against Ghana, the clamour to drop Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface in favour of the red-hot Rangers man is growing by the minute.
Dessers delivers against Ghana again
The Unity Cup’s revival after 21 years was meant to celebrate culture and community, but for Cyriel Dessers, it turned into a one-man audition.
)
Just 14 minutes into the clash against Ghana, the Super Eagles forward latched onto a superb cross from Sodiq Ismail and slotted home with composure to give Nigeria the lead.
Throughout the 90 minutes, Dessers stayed sharp, dangerous, and fully engaged, giving the Black Stars defence no rest, even though he could not add to his tally.

This wasn’t just a flash in the pan either, as Dessers now has three goals in seven appearances for Nigeria, with two of them coming against the Black Stars. That’s a habit worth keeping, and fans certainly agree.
Fans call for Dessers as Boniface’s struggles continue
Social media lit up after the final whistle, with some urging Coach Chelle to “remove Boniface” for the next squad and calling for Dessers to deputise Victor Osimhen in the remaining World Cup qualifiers.

One fan said, Imagine Dessers and Osimhen combining striking for Nigeria!” while another added, “@eric_chelle please remove Boniface name for that squad to face Russia put desser[sic].”
While Dessers soars, Boniface has stumbled this season. The Bayer Leverkusen striker’s second season in the Bundesliga has been derailed by injuries and the rise of Patrick Schick.
)
With only 19 league appearances in 2024/25, Boniface’s form has dipped, and so has public faith in him, especially among fans of the national team, leaving the door wide open for Dessers, who just won the Scottish Premiership Golden Boot with 18 goals and boasts 29 goals in all competitions for Rangers.
Boniface will have a shot at redemption in the upcoming June friendly against Russia, but for now, the momentum is firmly in Dessers’ corner.
