Kenya have been drawn in Group F alongside Seychelles and Gabon, The Gambia, Burundi, and Ivory Coast.

Former Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma has expressed optimism that Kenya can do well in the FIFA World Cup qualifying group when the side launches its campaign against Gabon and Seychelles in November.

The outspoken coach has further expressed satisfaction at what he has seen with the side, who have been taking part in international friendlies for much of the year following the lifting of the ban imposed on Kenyan football by FIFA in 2022.

Kenya has played Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Mauritius, Qatar and South Sudan this year, and Ouma believes that all six opposition have helped Engin Firat build a spine he can rely on.

“I am happy with the friendly matches that Harambee Stars have featured in,” Ouma said in an interview on NTV. “They are very decisive friendly matches,” he added.

“As a coach, you try and look at the quality per position then in the qualifiers, you try to focus on your strategy because you are aware how far your players can punch.”

Ouma believes Harambee Stars have come of age based on the six friendly matches they have played this year, which could give them a good platform to start off their campaign against Gabon in November.

“In this group, if you compare with the friendlies that we have drawn in, it is open for us, so it is up to our boys to put in good concentration, good minds and if you look, they are coming of age.

“Many people are following up on the team and you are seeing both positive criticism and more criticism that you can deal with at such a level, but I think that the possibilities of us going through are open.

“The only thing is that considering how I have seen them play, they need to maintain their focus because preparation has been good.

“For the team to be able to be exposed at such a level, this is an investment by the federation that has proven that the side can compete against teams like Qatar and Russia.

“If you have tested yourself against the world (championship level) nations, then when you come back here, you have to have that mentality that you can push the opposition.

“Our first game against Gabon is a good example. Very essential game for us, so in the qualifiers, if worse goes to worse, get a point but if you get three points, the reality is that you make a big step, so how you start your first match will determine how you end it.”
